Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PRMU), established in 1920, is one of Russia's oldest and most prestigious medical institutions located in Nizhny Novgorod. Recognized by NMC, WHO, and ECFMG, PRMU offers world-class medical education in English medium to over 800 Indian students.
History & Founding
Founded in 1920 as Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Institute, PRMU has over 100 years of excellence in medical education and research. It was granted Research University status in 2009.
The university has trained over 45,000 doctors who serve globally. It is named after academician I.
P. Pavlov and has been a pioneer in clinical research, cardiology, and neuroscience in Russia.
Accreditation & Approvals
PRMU is recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC) India, World Health Organization (WHO), Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) USA, General Medical Council (GMC) UK, and listed in WDOMS. Graduates are eligible to practice in India after clearing NExT/FMGE and worldwide after respective licensing exams.
Faculty & Teaching

Teaching Hospital
PRMU operates 4 multi-specialty teaching hospitals: University Hospital (800 beds), City Clinical Hospital No. 5 (600 beds), Cardiology Center (500 beds), and Children's Hospital (600 beds).
Total 2,500+ beds across specialties: cardiology, neurology, oncology, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, trauma, and emergency medicine. Students get extensive clinical exposure from Year 3 onwards.

Course Structure & Curriculum
Year 1-2: Pre-clinical subjects - Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Microbiology. Year 3-4: Para-clinical and clinical subjects - Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine. Year 5-6: Clinical rotations in Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, and elective postings.
Final year includes internship rotations in university hospitals. Examinations held semester-wise. Clinical training begins from Year 3.
FMGE / NExT Passing Performance
Privolzhsky Research Medical University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC), India. Indian students who graduate from PRMU are eligible to appear for NExT (National Exit Test) or FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) to obtain license to practice in India. NMC recognition is current as of March 2025 - students must verify NMC website before admission as recognition status can change.
