About RMC

History & Legacy

Rangpur Medical College was established in 1970 by the Government of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) under the leadership of Dr. Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, the founding Principal and a distinguished surgeon trained at Edinburgh Medical School. Initially designed to serve the healthcare needs of the northern region of Bangladesh, the college started with an annual intake of 50 students and a 250-bed teaching hospital.

Following Bangladesh independence in 1971, the college was reorganized under the Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s. By 1985, the hospital bed capacity had doubled to 500 beds. WHO recognition came in 1978, making it one of the earliest Bangladeshi medical colleges to receive international validation.

The college was listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) in 1982, and received NMC India recognition (then MCI) in 1994. Major infrastructure expansion occurred in 2005 when the new academic complex with modern lecture theatres, anatomy dissection halls, and biochemistry laboratories was inaugurated. Today, RMC admits 150 students annually including 15-20 Indian students each year.

Notable alumni include Dr. Farid Ahmed who now practices at Royal Liverpool University Hospital UK, Dr. Meenakshi Iyer working at Apollo Hospitals Chennai after clearing FMGE in first attempt, and Dr.

Rajesh Kumar serving at Medanta Gurugram. Over 400 graduates are practicing across India, UK, USA, Australia, and Middle Eastern countries.

Accreditation & Recognition

Rangpur Medical College holds full recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, making graduates eligible to appear for the National Exit Test (NExT) which replaced FMGE for obtaining medical practice license in India. The college has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) since 1982 with continuous recognition. RMC is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and appears on the ECFMG FAIMER International Medical Education Directory, making graduates eligible for USMLE pathway to practice in the United States.

The college is accredited by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), the national regulatory authority for medical education. RMC is approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) of UK for PLAB pathway and by the Medical Council of Canada for MCCEE. The college maintains memberships in regional medical education bodies including South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Medical Colleges Network.

What You'll Study (Year-by-Year)

The MBBS program at Rangpur Medical College spans 6 years including a 1-year compulsory rotating internship, following the curriculum prescribed by the University of Dhaka Faculty of Medicine. Year 1 covers foundational medical sciences: Anatomy including gross anatomy with full cadaveric dissection (students work in groups of 4-5 on assigned cadavers), embryology, histology, and neuroanatomy; Physiology covering systemic physiology of all organ systems with laboratory practicals in haematology, ECG, spirometry; and Biochemistry including clinical chemistry, molecular biology, and nutrition with quantitative analysis practicals. Teaching methodology combines didactic lectures, small group tutorials, and hands-on laboratory sessions.

First-year examinations include written theory papers, practical examinations with specimen identification and slide reading, and viva voce. Year 2 transitions to disease mechanisms: Pathology covering general pathology and systemic pathology with extensive microscopy practicals identifying disease processes; Microbiology including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycology with culture techniques and sensitivity testing practicals highly relevant for tropical diseases; Pharmacology covering drug classifications, mechanisms of action, adverse effects, and therapeutics; and Community Medicine addressing epidemiology, biostatistics, preventive medicine, and public health. Second professional examinations follow similar pattern with theory, practicals, and clinical case-based questions.

Year 3 marks first intensive clinical contact: students begin attending wards at Rangpur Medical College Hospital in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Students learn history-taking, physical examination techniques, and clinical reasoning under direct faculty supervision. Forensic Medicine and Medical Jurisprudence theory is covered alongside Ophthalmology and ENT introductory rotations.

Year 4 intensifies clinical training with dedicated 8-week rotations in each major specialty: Internal Medicine covering cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology cases; General Surgery including pre-operative assessment, assisting in surgeries, post-operative care; Obstetrics with labor room duties and conducting normal deliveries; Gynecology covering common gynecological conditions; Pediatrics including newborn assessment and pediatric emergencies. Students participate in daily rounds, case presentations, and departmental seminars. Year 5 is predominantly hospital-based (approximately 75 percent clinical, 25 percent didactic) with advanced rotations in all specialties plus exposure to super-specialties: Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Orthopedics with trauma management, Anesthesiology, Radiology with image interpretation skills.

Students take increasing responsibility for patient management under supervision, write case notes, and present cases during ward rounds. Final professional examinations at end of Year 5 include comprehensive written papers covering all clinical subjects, OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) stations testing clinical skills, and bedside clinical examinations with real patients. Year 6 is the compulsory rotating internship where graduates rotate through Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Orthopedics for 2 months each, functioning as junior doctors under senior resident and faculty supervision, managing patients, writing prescriptions, assisting surgeries, and conducting deliveries.

Throughout the curriculum, clinical case discussions emphasize diagnostic reasoning and management protocols aligned with NExT examination blueprint. Faculty regularly conduct mock FMGE-style MCQ tests from Year 3 onwards. The examination pattern combining MCQs, clinical OSCE stations, and bedside assessment directly prepares students for the NExT examination format which similarly tests theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and patient management ability across all medical disciplines.

Teaching Hospital

The primary teaching hospital is Rangpur Medical College Hospital, a 500-bed multi-specialty tertiary care government hospital located adjacent to the academic campus within 2 minutes walking distance. The hospital handles over 850 outpatient visits daily and admits approximately 400 inpatients across all departments. After MBBS: Your Career Paths

Most Popular
🇮🇳
India
NExT / FMGE

After completing MBBS from Rangpur Medical College, graduates must clear the National Exit Test (NExT) to practice medicine in India. NExT is now the unified licensing-cum-entrance examination replacing the earlier FMGE. The examination consists of theory papers testing knowledge across all medical subjects and clinical practical assessment evaluating case-based diagnosis and management skills.

Upon clearing NExT with the qualifying percentile, graduates apply for State Medical Council registration in their home state which typically takes 2 to 3 months for processing and verification of documents. Starting salaries for newly registered doctors in private hospitals and clinics range from Rs. 40,000 to Rs.

70,000 monthly depending on location and hospital tier. Government positions through state health department recruitments offer Rs. 60,000 to Rs.

80,000 as starting consolidated pay. For postgraduate specialization, doctors must appear for NEET-PG examination, with rank determining admission to MD/MS programs in desired specialties and colleges. Rangpur Medical College curriculum emphasizes clinical case-based learning from Year 3 onwards which directly benefits students preparing for NExT clinical scenario questions.

The extensive bedside teaching and patient interaction during internship year strengthens diagnostic reasoning abilities tested in NExT. Graduates have successfully secured positions in corporate hospital chains like Apollo, Fortis, and Max Healthcare, as well as rural postings under National Health Mission schemes. Starting private practice after gaining 2-3 years experience in hospitals is also a common pathway, with established general practitioners earning Rs.

1. 5 to Rs. 4 lakhs monthly in tier-2 and tier-3 Indian cities.

🇺🇸
USA
USMLE

Indian graduates from Rangpur Medical College pursuing careers in the United States must complete the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) pathway consisting of Step 1 (basic sciences), Step 2 CK (clinical knowledge), and Step 2 CS (clinical skills - currently suspended but may resume in modified format). ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certification is mandatory, requiring graduation from a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) - Rangpur Medical College holds this listing making graduates eligible. After ECFMG certification, graduates apply for residency positions through the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) which conducts the annual Match process.

Competition is intense with IMG (International Medical Graduate) match rates around 60% for non-US citizens. First-year resident physicians (PGY-1) earn approximately 55,000 to 70,000 USD annually with salaries increasing each year of residency training. After completing 3 to 7 years of residency depending on specialty, board-certified attending physicians earn substantially higher incomes ranging from 200,000 USD in primary care specialties like Family Medicine and Internal Medicine to 400,000 USD or more in procedural specialties like Surgery, Anesthesiology, Radiology, and Cardiology.

Total costs for USMLE examinations including Step 1 (approximately 1,000 USD), Step 2 CK (approximately 1,500 USD), application fees, travel for interviews, and preparatory courses typically range from 10,000 to 18,000 USD. The pathway is demanding requiring 2-3 years of dedicated preparation alongside clinical internship, but successful graduates achieve excellent career outcomes. Rangpur Medical College alumni have matched into US residency programs, though numbers are modest compared to larger established universities.

🇬🇧
UK
PLAB

For practicing medicine in the United Kingdom, Rangpur Medical College graduates must complete the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) pathway administered by the General Medical Council (GMC). PLAB consists of two parts: PLAB 1 is a computer-based examination testing medical knowledge through 180 multiple-choice questions covering all clinical disciplines, with exam centers available in several countries including India. PLAB 2 is an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) format practical assessment held only in the UK at GMC centers in Manchester or London, testing clinical examination skills, communication, and patient management through 16 stations.

After passing both PLAB examinations, candidates apply for GMC registration which grants a license to practice medicine in the UK. New doctors then enter the two-year NHS Foundation Programme (FY1 and FY2) which is mandatory training rotating through different hospital specialties. Foundation Year 1 doctors earn approximately 29,000 to 34,000 GBP annually (around Rs.

32 to Rs. 37 lakhs), with salaries increasing in FY2 and substantially more during specialty training years. After foundation training, doctors apply for specialty training programs (equivalent to residency) in their chosen field lasting 5 to 8 years depending on specialty.

Total PLAB examination costs including PLAB 1 fee (approximately 275 GBP), PLAB 2 fee (approximately 900 GBP), GMC registration fees, travel to UK for PLAB 2, and preparatory materials amount to roughly 2,500 to 3,500 GBP (Rs. 2. 75 to Rs.

3. 85 lakhs). Rangpur Medical College is listed in WDOMS and graduates are eligible for the PLAB pathway.

The clinical training emphasis in the curriculum, particularly bedside teaching and OSCE-style assessments, prepares students reasonably well for PLAB 2 practical examination format.

🏠
Bangladesh
Local Residency

Graduates from Rangpur Medical College can pursue medical licensing in Bangladesh through the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) registration process. However, this pathway is rarely pursued by Indian students as the intention is typically to return to India or pursue opportunities in Western countries. The Bangladesh health system does offer residency programs in various specialties through FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) and MD/MS programs at major teaching hospitals in Dhaka, Chittagong, and other cities.

Some Indian graduates have temporarily worked in Bangladesh private hospitals or NGO health projects immediately after graduation to gain clinical experience before attempting licensing exams for India or other countries. Rangpur Medical College itself offers postgraduate programs including MD in various clinical and non-clinical disciplines, though these are primarily designed for Bangladeshi citizens. For Indian students, the local medical system serves primarily as a training ground during the MBBS years rather than a long-term career destination.

The clinical exposure during internship year rotations through Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and Emergency departments of Rangpur Medical College Hospital and affiliated hospitals provides valuable practical experience that strengthens competency for licensing examinations in India or abroad.

PG & Specialization Options

After clearing FMGE / NExT, Indian graduates must register with the State Medical Council. PG admissions are via NEET-PG. Foreign graduates may also pursue USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), or AMC (Australia).

Rangpur Medical College is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India and has been continuously listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) since 1982. Graduates of RMC are eligible to appear for the National Exit Test (NExT) which has replaced the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) as the mandatory screening test for Indian students who complete MBBS abroad.

To practice medicine in India, students must obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate before starting their MBBS program abroad, which requires NEET qualification and submission of documents to NMC. After completing the 6-year MBBS degree including internship, graduates must clear the NExT examination (combining theoretical knowledge and clinical skills assessment) to obtain permanent medical registration in India.

The NExT examination is conducted in two parts - NExT-1 taken during the final year and NExT-2 taken after internship completion. We strongly advise all prospective students and parents to independently verify the current NMC recognition status of Rangpur Medical College by visiting the official NMC India website at nmc.

Our structured program begins with foundational revision modules covering first-year subjects Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry alongside your ongoing second-year studies in Pathology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology.

These weekly online classes focus on high-yield topics frequently tested in NExT, using pattern-based teaching methodology aligned with actual examination blueprints. From Year 4 onwards when clinical subjects commence, our coaching intensifies with dedicated modules in Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine (PSM), ENT, Ophthalmology, and clinical rotations subjects.

We emphasize integrative learning connecting basic science concepts with clinical applications exactly as NExT questions are framed. Year 5 coaching includes full-length NExT simulation tests conducted monthly, replicating actual examination conditions with 200-question papers covering all subjects in the prescribed NExT pattern.

Our question bank contains over 15,000 MCQs sourced from previous FMGE papers, NEET-PG questions, and NExT sample papers released by NBE, continuously updated as new patterns emerge. During final year and internship, we conduct specialized clinical case discussion sessions where faculty present real patient scenarios and students practice diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnosis formulation, and management planning - directly preparing for the clinical competency assessment component of NExT.

OSCE preparation modules train students in clinical examination techniques, communication skills, and procedural knowledge tested in practical stations. All coaching content is delivered through our secure student portal accessible from anywhere with internet connectivity, featuring recorded lectures for revision, live doubt-clearing sessions every weekend, downloadable notes, and progress tracking dashboards.

Students coached by AV Global have achieved NExT/FMGE pass rates of 68 to 74 percent in recent examination cycles, significantly higher than the overall IMG pass rate of approximately 45 percent, demonstrating the effectiveness of our parallel preparation strategy.

Complete Guide to MBBS at RMC

Rangpur Medical College represents exceptional value for Indian students seeking quality government medical college education in Bangladesh at highly affordable cost. Since its establishment in 1970 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, RMC has maintained a reputation for producing competent physicians serving across Bangladesh, India, and internationally. What makes Rangpur Medical College particularly attractive for Indian students is the combination of government college infrastructure and faculty quality with tuition fees of just $4,800 per year (approximately Rs.4,27,200 annually) - less than half the cost of MBBS in countries like Georgia, Russia, or Philippines. As a public institution under the Government of Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, RMC offers the same rigorous training standards as Indian government medical colleges but without the intense entrance competition for 85,000 total MBBS seats across India. The college received WHO recognition in 1978 and was listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) in 1982, making it one of the earliest internationally recognized medical colleges in Bangladesh. NMC India recognition came in 1994 (when NMC was called Medical Council of India), and this recognition has been continuously maintained through periodic inspections, most recently reaffirmed in 2023. The clinical training at Rangpur Medical College is particularly strong due to the 500-bed Rangpur Medical College Hospital located just 2 minutes walk from academic buildings. Unlike some private medical colleges where students struggle to find adequate patient exposure, RMC students benefit from high patient footfall of 850+ outpatients daily and consistent inpatient census across all departments. The patient disease profile mirrors conditions commonly seen in India - dengue, malaria, typhoid, tuberculosis, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease - providing directly relevant clinical experience for students planning to return to practice in India after clearing NExT examination. Beyond the main teaching hospital, RMC has affiliated arrangements with 7 additional hospitals including Rangpur Diabetes Hospital (120 beds), Rangpur Chest Disease Hospital (100 beds), Rangpur TB Hospital, and Rangpur Infectious Disease Hospital, bringing total clinical bed access to over 1,200 beds. This multi-hospital exposure is particularly valuable for tropical medicine and infectious disease experience rarely available in European medical schools. The fee structure for MBBS in Rangpur Medical College remains among the most affordable: annual tuition of $4,800 plus hostel charges of approximately $600 per year totaling just $5,400 (Rs.4,80,600) annually. Total 6-year cost including registration fees, visa charges, travel, food, and personal expenses is approximately Rs.35-38 lakhs for the complete MBBS degree - comparable to capitation fees for a single seat in Indian deemed universities but at a government medical college with far superior clinical training. Rangpur city offers significant advantages in terms of cost of living and cultural comfort for Indian students. Located in northern Bangladesh just 32 kilometers from the Haldibari India-Bangladesh border crossing, Rangpur is easily accessible for parents who can visit via Siliguri-Haldibari route. The city has a substantial Bengali Hindu population and Indian cultural elements are prevalent, making adjustment easier for Indian students. Monthly living expenses including food, local transport, phone bills, and entertainment average Rs.8,000-12,000 - significantly lower than Dhaka or Chittagong. The hostel mess provides both Bangladeshi and North Indian vegetarian cuisine options. Regular trains and buses connect Rangpur to Dhaka (5 hours) and to the Indian border. AV Global Overseas Education has a strong partnership track record with Rangpur Medical College, having successfully placed 47 Indian students since 2015 with zero visa rejections or admission issues. Our students consistently report high satisfaction with clinical training quality, faculty support, and the value-for-money proposition. Recent alumni outcomes demonstrate the quality of education: our 2019 batch student Dr. Meenakshi Iyer cleared FMGE on first attempt with 196/300 marks and now works at Apollo Hospitals Chennai; Dr. Amit Sharma from 2017 batch cleared USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and is currently in residency match process for Internal Medicine programs in USA; Dr. Priya Patel from 2018 batch cleared PLAB and is working at NHS Trust hospital in Manchester. Rangpur Medical College fees for Indian students remain frozen at $4,800 per year by government policy, providing predictable budgeting unlike private colleges that arbitrarily increase fees. The college administration is experienced in handling international students and provides support for visa extensions, academic transcript preparations, and degree attestations required for NMC eligibility certificate application. For families seeking NMC approved medical education with strong clinical foundation but constrained by budget limitations, MBBS in Rangpur Medical College offers an outstanding pathway to medical career in India and internationally.
