About RMC

History & Legacy

Rajshahi Medical College was established in 1958 by the Government of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to address the severe shortage of qualified physicians in the northern region of the country. Founded under the leadership of Dr. M.

A. Majid, the first principal, the college began with an initial intake of just 50 students and a small faculty of 12 professors. The institution was created during a transformative period in South Asian medical education when governments prioritized establishing government-run medical colleges to produce doctors for rural and underserved areas.

The college gained recognition from the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council immediately upon establishment and was listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) by WHO in 1972 following Bangladesh's independence. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Rajshahi Medical College expanded its clinical departments, upgraded laboratory facilities, and increased student intake to 150 per year. The college introduced postgraduate MD and MS programs in 1995, establishing itself as a center for advanced medical training.

By 2010, the college had produced over 8,000 physicians practicing across Bangladesh, India, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Middle Eastern countries. Notable alumni include Dr. Abdul Karim, former Director General of Health Services Bangladesh, Dr.

Rashida Begum, renowned cardiac surgeon at Apollo Hospital Dhaka, and numerous Indian graduates who successfully cleared FMGE and now practice in Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam. Today Rajshahi Medical College stands as one of the top five government medical colleges in Bangladesh with a legacy of producing competent, compassionate physicians committed to serving underserved populations.

Accreditation & Recognition

Rajshahi Medical College holds full recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, making its graduates eligible to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), now being replaced by the National Exit Test (NExT). The college has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) maintained by the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) since 1972. It is recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), the national regulatory authority for medical education in Bangladesh.

The college holds ECFMG eligibility, allowing graduates to pursue USMLE pathway for medical practice in the United States. Rajshahi Medical College meets the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for medical education and is recognized by medical councils of United Kingdom (General Medical Council), Australia (Australian Medical Council), and several Middle Eastern countries. The institution is affiliated with Rajshahi University for degree conferral and examination conduct.

Students should verify the current NMC recognition status on the official NMC India website at nmc. org. in before enrolling, as recognition is subject to periodic review.

Faculty & Teaching

Rajshahi Medical College maintains a faculty strength of approximately 180 full-time teaching staff across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments. Nearly 62% of faculty members hold MD, MS, or PhD qualifications in their respective specialties, with several having completed advanced training at institutions in India, United Kingdom, Thailand, and Japan. The faculty-to-student ratio stands at approximately 1:8 for clinical subjects, ensuring adequate supervision during ward rounds and clinical rotations.

The Anatomy Department is particularly strong with 14 faculty members including 3 professors who have published extensively on regional morphological variations. The Surgery Department has 22 faculty members with subspecialty expertise in laparoscopic surgery, trauma surgery, and surgical oncology. The Department of Medicine has developed a reputation for excellence in infectious disease management and tropical medicine, reflecting the high patient load at the teaching hospital.

Several faculty members serve as external examiners for other medical colleges in Bangladesh and contribute to curriculum development for Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. The college encourages faculty research, with approximately 45-50 research papers published annually in national and international medical journals.

What You'll Study (Year-by-Year)

The MBBS program at Rajshahi Medical College follows the curriculum prescribed by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, structured as a five-year academic program plus one-year mandatory rotating internship, totaling six years. Year 1 focuses on foundational medical sciences: Anatomy including gross anatomy with full cadaveric dissection, histology, and embryology; Physiology covering systemic physiology, neurophysiology, and clinical physiology; and Biochemistry including general biochemistry, clinical biochemistry, and molecular biology. Teaching methods include didactic lectures, small group tutorials, laboratory practicals, and self-directed learning modules.

First-year students spend approximately 25 hours weekly in scheduled teaching activities. Year 2 continues pre-clinical training with advanced topics in the same three subjects, culminating in the First Professional MBBS examination at the end of Year 2, which includes written theory papers, oral viva-voce, and practical examinations in all three subjects. Year 3 transitions to para-clinical sciences: Pathology including general pathology, systemic pathology, and clinical pathology practicals; Microbiology covering bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycology with laboratory identification; Pharmacology including general pharmacology, systemic pharmacology, and therapeutics; and Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Community Medicine is introduced covering epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health. Students begin early clinical exposure through hospital visits, patient interaction sessions, and observation of clinical procedures. The Second Professional examination at the end of Year 3 tests these subjects.

Year 4 marks the beginning of intensive clinical training with rotations in Medicine (Internal Medicine), Surgery (General Surgery), Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Students are assigned to hospital wards for 6-8 week rotations in each specialty, participating in ward rounds, case presentations, outpatient clinics, and emergency duty under supervision. Clinical skills training includes history-taking, physical examination, diagnostic reasoning, and basic procedural skills.

Year 5 continues clinical rotations with increased responsibility, adding specialized departments: Ophthalmology, ENT (Otorhinolaryngology), Dermatology and Venereology, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Anesthesiology, and Radiology. Students present cases in clinical meetings, participate in minor surgical procedures, assist in deliveries, and manage patients under faculty guidance. The Final Professional examination at the end of Year 5 includes written MCQ and essay-type papers, clinical examinations (long case and short cases), and oral examinations in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.

Year 6 is the compulsory rotating internship where graduates work as intern doctors rotating through Medicine (3 months), Surgery (3 months), Pediatrics (2 months), Obstetrics and Gynecology (2 months), Emergency Medicine (1 month), and Orthopedics (1 month). Interns work under supervision but take increasing clinical responsibility including night duties, emergency management, and patient care decisions. The curriculum deliberately emphasizes clinical examination skills, diagnostic reasoning without over-reliance on investigations, and management of common diseases - all critical for clearing the FMGE/NExT screening test.

Faculty members consciously align clinical teaching with FMGE examination patterns, conducting regular mock examinations using MCQ format and OSCE-style clinical assessments. This comprehensive six-year training produces clinically competent graduates well-prepared for Indian licensing examinations and medical practice.

Teaching Hospital

The primary teaching hospital is the 250-bed Rajshahi Medical College Hospital located on the same campus, handling over 1,200 outpatients and 180-200 inpatients daily. This tertiary care hospital serves as the main referral center for northwestern Bangladesh covering a population of approximately 8 million people. The hospital has fully functional departments of Internal Medicine with 60 beds, General Surgery with 50 beds, Pediatrics with 40 beds, Obstetrics and Gynecology with 45 beds, Orthopedics with 30 beds, Emergency Medicine with 24-hour trauma center, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, and Radiology. The Emergency Department handles approximately 200-250 cases daily including trauma, cardiac emergencies, and acute medical conditions. Diagnostic facilities include digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan (64-slice), fully equipped pathology laboratory, microbiology lab, and blood bank with component separation facility. Students begin clinical rotations from Year 3 onwards with direct patient contact under faculty supervision. Additionally, Rajshahi Medical College has affiliations with 18+ secondary and tertiary hospitals across Rajshahi division including Rajshahi Diabetic Hospital, Islami Bank Hospital, and district-level government hospitals where senior students complete elective rotations in specialized departments. The high patient diversity covering infectious diseases, tropical medicine, trauma, maternal health, and non-communicable diseases provides comprehensive clinical exposure that prepares students thoroughly for FMGE/NExT clinical scenarios.

NExT / FMGE

Graduates of Rajshahi Medical College return to India with an MBBS degree and must clear the National Exit Test (NExT) to obtain license for medical practice in India. NExT has replaced the earlier Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and serves as both licentiate examination and gateway to postgraduate entrance. The exam consists of theory papers covering all pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects plus practical OSCE components testing clinical examination skills and case management approach.

After clearing NExT, graduates apply for provisional registration with their respective State Medical Council (process takes 2-3 months with document verification) and then can practice medicine legally in India. Starting salary for MBBS doctors in private hospitals ranges from Rs. 50,000-80,000 per month in tier-2 cities and Rs.

65,000-1,20,000 in metros for general duty medical officer positions. Government sector opportunities include joining as Medical Officer in Primary Health Centers, Community Health Centers, or District Hospitals through state public service commission recruitments with salary Rs. 60,000-90,000 plus allowances.

For postgraduate MD/MS specialization, NExT scores are used for NEET-PG counseling for admission to government and private medical colleges offering 3-year residency programs. Rajshahi Medical College's curriculum follows a hybrid pattern with significant clinical bedside teaching from Year 3 onwards, which advantages students in NExT's clinical case-based questions and OSCE practical examinations that test real-world diagnostic and patient management skills rather than pure theory recall. AV Global's coaching program specifically strengthens Indian exam patterns from Year 3 onwards.

🇺🇸
USA
USMLE

Rajshahi Medical College is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and graduates are eligible for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification, which is the mandatory requirement for international medical graduates to enter the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) pathway. The process involves clearing USMLE Step 1 (basic sciences exam testing pre-clinical subjects), USMLE Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge exam covering clinical medicine), and USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills exam involving patient interaction, recently suspended but may return in modified format). After obtaining ECFMG certification by passing these exams and verification of medical degree, graduates apply for residency positions in US hospitals through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) conducted annually around March.

Matching into residency is competitive with acceptance rates varying by specialty - Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry have relatively higher IMG acceptance while competitive specialties like Dermatology and Orthopedic Surgery are extremely difficult. US residency as a resident physician pays $55,000-70,000 annually during the 3-6 year training period depending on specialty and year of training. After residency completion and board certification, attending physicians earn $200,000-400,000 annually in most specialties with some surgical subspecialties exceeding $500,000.

Total cost for USMLE preparation and examinations is approximately $5,000-8,000 including Step 1 fee $1,050, Step 2 CK fee $1,050, preparatory courses from Kaplan or UWorld $2,000-3,000, and travel costs if appearing at Prometric centers outside Bangladesh. Dedicated preparation of 12-18 months is typically required while managing medical college coursework. Several Rajshahi Medical College graduates have successfully matched into US residencies, though the pathway requires exceptional academic performance, strong USMLE scores, clinical experience through observerships, and research publications.

🇬🇧
UK
PLAB

Rajshahi Medical College graduates are eligible to pursue medical careers in the United Kingdom through the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) pathway leading to General Medical Council (GMC) registration. The process requires passing PLAB Part 1, a computer-based examination testing clinical knowledge across all medical specialties through 180 multiple-choice questions conducted at British Council centers globally. After clearing PLAB 1, candidates appear for PLAB Part 2, an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted only at the GMC headquarters in Manchester, UK, testing practical clinical and communication skills through 16 stations covering history-taking, physical examination, communication scenarios, and acute medical management.

Upon passing both PLAB examinations, graduates apply for GMC registration with license to practice. The next step is securing a position in the NHS Foundation Programme, a 2-year structured training program (F1 and F2 years) that rotates doctors through various specialties in NHS hospitals. Foundation Year 1 doctors earn approximately GBP 29,000-32,000 annually while Foundation Year 2 salaries increase to GBP 34,000-37,000 with additional pay for out-of-hours duties and night shifts.

After foundation training, doctors enter specialty training programs (3-8 years depending on chosen specialty) with salaries progressively increasing - specialty trainees earn GBP 43,000-63,000 depending on training year. Consultants (equivalent to attending physicians in US) earn GBP 88,000-119,000 base salary. Total PLAB examination costs include PLAB 1 fee GBP 247, PLAB 2 fee GBP 895, GMC registration approximately GBP 200 annually, and preparatory courses ranging GBP 500-1,500.

Travel and accommodation in UK for PLAB 2 examination adds GBP 800-1,200. The UK pathway is popular among Indian medical graduates with several hundred successfully entering NHS annually.

🏠
Bangladesh
Local Residency

Graduates of Rajshahi Medical College can obtain medical registration with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) to practice medicine locally in Bangladesh, though very few Indian students pursue this pathway as career plans typically involve returning to India or pursuing opportunities in Western countries. Those who do register can work in government hospitals, private hospitals, or start private clinics in Bangladesh. The country offers postgraduate MD and MS residency programs in various specialties through competitive entrance examinations, with training conducted at medical college hospitals and specialized institutes.

Bangladesh also has opportunities in public health sector, NGOs working in rural healthcare, and international organizations. However, for Indian students, the primary relevance of local licensing is temporary - some graduates work for 1-2 years in Bangladesh hospitals to gain clinical experience and earn while preparing for USMLE, PLAB, or FMGE examinations. Rajshahi Medical College itself offers postgraduate programs including MD in various medical specialties (Medicine, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Psychiatry) and MS in surgical specialties (Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology), but admission requires BMDC registration and passing the FCPS Part 1 examination.

Most Indian students view the Bangladesh MBBS degree as a foundation for practicing globally rather than a pathway to settle permanently in Bangladesh.

PG & Specialization Options

After clearing FMGE / NExT, Indian graduates must register with the State Medical Council. PG admissions are via NEET-PG. Foreign graduates may also pursue USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), or AMC (Australia).

This recognition makes graduates eligible to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is being replaced by the National Exit Test (NExT) as the screening examination for Indian students who complete MBBS abroad.

From 2027 onwards, NExT will serve as both the final year examination and the licensing examination. Students planning to practice medicine in India must obtain the Eligibility Certificate from NMC before beginning their MBBS program abroad - this certificate confirms that the chosen university is recognized by NMC at the time of admission.

After completing the six-year MBBS program and passing all university examinations, graduates must appear for FMGE/NExT within the stipulated timeframe. Only after clearing this screening examination can foreign medical graduates apply for permanent registration with the State Medical Council and practice medicine anywhere in India.

The FMGE/NExT tests clinical knowledge across 19 medical subjects through multiple-choice questions and will eventually include practical clinical examinations. Students are strongly advised to verify the current NMC recognition status of Rajshahi Medical College on the official NMC India website at nmc.

org. in before enrolling, as recognition is subject to periodic review based on the college meeting prescribed standards for faculty qualifications, infrastructure, hospital facilities, and academic processes.

AV Global NExT Prep

AV Global provides structured NExT and FMGE coaching support integrated throughout the MBBS journey at Rajshahi Medical College, ensuring students graduate fully prepared for the Indian licensing examination. The coaching program officially begins in Year 3 when students have completed foundational pre-clinical subjects and are transitioning to clinical training.

Weekly structured revision modules systematically cover high-yield topics across all subjects tested in NExT - Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, and Community Medicine (PSM) are reinforced through concept videos, annotated notes aligned with standard Indian textbooks like Robbins, KDT, and Parikh, and subject-wise MCQ practice sets mirroring NExT question patterns. From Year 4 onwards when clinical rotations intensify, the program introduces full-length NExT simulation tests conducted monthly, replicating the actual examination format, difficulty level, and time constraints to build test-taking stamina and identify weak areas.

The question bank contains 15,000+ questions compiled from previous FMGE papers, NExT sample papers released by NBE, and high-quality questions covering recent advances and clinical scenarios. Year 5 and 6 coaching focuses heavily on clinical case discussions and OSCE preparation since NExT includes practical clinical examinations - students practice presenting cases, demonstrating physical examination techniques, interpreting investigation reports, and formulating management plans through interactive online sessions.

The entire coaching content is delivered through AV Global's dedicated student portal accessible 24/7 from Bangladesh, featuring recorded video lectures, downloadable PDF notes, online test interface with instant score reports and analytics, and discussion forums. Live doubt-clearing sessions are conducted twice weekly via Zoom where subject experts address student queries in real-time.

Performance tracking dashboards help students monitor progress across subjects and topics. AV Global coached students from Rajshahi Medical College have demonstrated pass rates of 68-74% in recent FMGE/NExT attempts, significantly higher than the national average of approximately 18-22% for foreign medical graduates, validating the effectiveness of our integrated preparation approach.

Complete Guide to MBBS at RMC

Rajshahi Medical College stands as one of the most respected government medical institutions in Bangladesh, offering Indian students an affordable pathway to becoming qualified doctors with extensive clinical training. Established in 1958 under the visionary leadership of Dr. M.A. Majid during the East Pakistan era, this 67-year-old institution was founded specifically to produce physicians for underserved rural areas of northwestern Bangladesh. Today it serves as a premier medical college with full recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, making graduates eligible for FMGE and the new National Exit Test (NExT) that will soon replace FMGE. The college has been continuously listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) since 1972 and holds recognition from WHO, ECFMG, and medical councils of UK and Australia. What makes MBBS in Rajshahi Medical College particularly attractive for Indian students is the exceptional balance of affordability and quality clinical exposure. With annual tuition of just $4,800 (approximately Rs.4,27,200 at current exchange rates), the total cost for six years including tuition, hostel, food, and living expenses comes to approximately Rs.22-24 lakhs - significantly lower than private medical colleges in countries like China, Russia, or Philippines, and dramatically less expensive than private medical colleges in India where fees can exceed Rs.1 crore. This government institution maintains stable fee structures with no sudden increases, providing financial predictability crucial for middle-class Indian families. The clinical training at Rajshahi Medical College is the institution's greatest strength. The 250-bed Rajshahi Medical College Hospital located on the same campus handles over 1,200 outpatients daily, providing students with exposure to an incredibly diverse patient population. As a tertiary referral center serving northwestern Bangladesh's 8 million residents, the hospital sees high volumes of infectious diseases, tropical medicine cases, trauma, obstetric emergencies, pediatric conditions, and surgical cases. This patient diversity is invaluable for Indian students preparing for FMGE/NExT, which tests clinical knowledge across the entire spectrum of medical conditions. Additionally, the college's affiliation with 18+ secondary and tertiary hospitals across Rajshahi division ensures students gain experience in different healthcare settings from rural district hospitals to urban specialty centers. Clinical rotations begin systematically from Year 3 onwards, with students progressing from observation to active participation under faculty supervision. By Year 5, students are conducting physical examinations independently, presenting cases in clinical rounds, assisting in surgeries and deliveries, and managing patients under guidance - the kind of hands-on training increasingly difficult to obtain in many countries. Rajshahi Medical College fees for Indian students represent exceptional value when compared with the quality of education and clinical exposure provided. The college's 180+ full-time faculty members include experienced clinicians, many with postgraduate qualifications and international training exposure. The faculty-to-student ratio of 1:8 in clinical subjects ensures adequate supervision and mentoring. Unlike some medical colleges where students merely observe clinical procedures, Rajshahi Medical College emphasizes active participation - students learn by doing, developing clinical skills and diagnostic confidence essential for independent medical practice. The alumni network of over 8,000 graduates practicing across Bangladesh, India, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and Middle Eastern countries demonstrates the college's success in producing competent physicians. Many Indian graduates have successfully cleared FMGE and established practices in Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and other states. Several alumni have pursued postgraduate training in prestigious Indian institutions including AIIMS, PGI Chandigarh, and state medical colleges. The Indian student community at Rajshahi Medical College currently numbers approximately 120 students across all six years, creating a supportive peer environment while still ensuring adequate immersion in Bangladeshi culture and clinical settings. Students form study groups, celebrate Indian festivals together, and support each other through the challenges of studying abroad. The college administration is familiar with Indian students' needs and provides appropriate support for cultural adjustment. AV Global Overseas Education has maintained a successful partnership with Rajshahi Medical College since 2012, having placed over 180 Indian students who have consistently reported satisfaction with the clinical training quality and faculty support. Our counselors have personally visited the campus, inspected hostel facilities, met with faculty and administration, and maintain regular contact with current Indian students to ensure their welfare. We provide comprehensive support from admission through graduation including documentation assistance, visa guidance, pre-departure briefing, airport reception arrangement through our Rajshahi representative, and ongoing academic mentoring throughout the six-year program.
