About SSMC

History & Legacy

Sir Salimullah Medical College traces its remarkable history to 1875 when it was established as Dhaka Medical School by Lieutenant Colonel Atchison, who served as Principal of Dhaka College. The school initially offered a Licentiate Medical Faculty (LMF) qualification and operated from a modest building in the Mitford area of Old Dhaka. In 1904, the institution was upgraded and renamed Dhaka Medical School in recognition of growing medical education needs in British Bengal.

The transformational moment arrived in 1962 when Nawab Sir Salimullah, the visionary Nawab of Dhaka who championed education and public welfare in Bengal during the early 20th century, was honored posthumously by renaming the institution Sir Salimullah Medical College. The college gained full degree-granting status and was affiliated with Dhaka University for MBBS programs. Following Bangladesh's independence in 1971, the college was brought under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and became affiliated with the newly formed Bangladesh University of Health Sciences.

The college received WHO recognition in 1984 and has been continuously listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) since that year. Today, over 6,000 graduates practice medicine across Bangladesh, India, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Middle Eastern countries. Alumni include eminent cardiologists, surgeons, and public health specialists serving in institutions like Apollo Hospitals India, NHS UK, and various American medical centers.

Accreditation & Recognition

Sir Salimullah Medical College holds full recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, qualifying its graduates to appear for FMGE/NExT examinations for medical licensure in India. Food for Indian Students

Dhaka offers excellent access to Indian cuisine, making food transition comfortable for students from India. Within a 10-minute walk from Sir Salimullah Medical College campus, students frequent restaurants like Khana's Indian Kitchen in Gulistan, Biryani House on Mitford Road (known for authentic Hyderabadi biryani), Taj Restaurant near Sadarghat serving North Indian vegetarian thalis, and Mehek Indian Cuisine in nearby Paltan area offering dosa, idli, and South Indian specialties. For groceries, Indian students shop at Meena Bazar supermarket chain (multiple locations in Dhaka including one in Gulistan 15 minutes from campus) and Shwapno retail stores, both stocking Indian spices, basmati rice, atta flour, dal varieties, pickles, papad, and familiar brands like MDH, Everest, and Haldiram's. Monthly food expenses vary significantly based on lifestyle choices. Students cooking in shared hostel kitchens or using electric kettles in rooms spend approximately Rs.5,000-9,000 per month on groceries and occasional outside meals. Those eating primarily at restaurants and campus canteens budget Rs.10,000-18,000 monthly. The college canteen serves affordable breakfast (paratha, egg, tea for Taka 40-60 or Rs.30-50) and lunch-dinner combinations (rice, dal, vegetable curry, chicken for Taka 80-120 or Rs.65-100 per meal). Vegetarian students find ample options as Bangladesh cuisine includes many vegetable-based dishes like shak bhaji (leafy greens), aloo posto (potato with poppy seeds), and dal preparations similar to Indian cooking. Several informal Indian messes run by senior students or local Indian families cater specifically to the medical college community, offering monthly meal plans for Rs.8,000-12,000 including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During exam periods and festivals like Diwali or Holi, Indian students organize community cooking sessions preparing familiar home food together.

City

Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, has a metropolitan population exceeding 21 million, making it one of the most densely populated cities globally. The city experiences a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons: hot and humid summers from March to June with temperatures ranging 30-38 degrees Celsius, monsoon season from June to October bringing heavy rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures of 25-32 degrees, and mild pleasant winter from November to February with temperatures between 12-25 degrees - the most comfortable period for studying and outdoor activities. Public transportation in Dhaka includes an extensive network of buses, auto-rickshaws (locally called CNGs running on compressed natural gas), cycle rickshaws, and ride-sharing services like Uber and Pathao which are affordable and widely used by students. The Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT Line-6) opened in 2022 connecting Uttara to Motijheel, though Sir Salimullah Medical College's Mitford location is currently not directly on the metro route. Weekend attractions include the historic Lalbagh Fort (30 minutes from campus), Ahsan Manzil Pink Palace museum, Star Mosque with beautiful mosaic work, Sadarghat River Port for boat rides on the Buriganga River, Hatirjheel Lake for evening walks, and Jamuna Future Park shopping mall for entertainment and dining. Students take short trips to Cox's Bazar (world's longest natural sea beach, 8-hour bus journey), Sylhet tea gardens (6 hours northeast), and Sundarbans mangrove forest. Monthly living expenses including hostel rent, food, local transport, mobile recharge, and personal expenses typically range from Rs.15,000-28,000 depending on individual lifestyle. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport offers excellent connectivity to India with daily direct flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Guwahati operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines, IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, with flight durations of 1.5-2.5 hours making home visits during vacations convenient and affordable.

Safety

Dhaka has mixed safety ratings with Numbeo crime safety index around 48-52 out of 100, indicating moderate safety concerns primarily related to petty theft and traffic chaos rather than violent crime. The city is generally safe for international students who exercise basic precautions. Incidents of violent crime specifically targeting medical students are extremely rare. The Sir Salimullah Medical College campus itself operates as a gated and guarded compound with controlled entry points, 24/7 security personnel, CCTV surveillance covering academic blocks and hostels, and strict visitor registration protocols. The Mitford area where the college is located is a well-established medical and educational zone with constant activity and police presence. Female students report feeling safe on campus and in hostels due to dedicated women wardens, biometric access systems, and strict 8 PM curfew timings that ensure students return before dark. For off-campus movement, female students are advised to travel in groups, use registered ride-sharing apps rather than street auto-rickshaws after sunset, and inform hostel wardens of their destinations. Safe neighborhoods popular with students for weekend outings include Gulshan (upscale diplomatic area), Banani (modern restaurants and cafes), Dhanmondi (residential area with parks and eateries), and Uttara (planned residential zone with shopping centers). The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is located at Plot 2, Road 142, Gulshan-1, Dhaka-1212, with 24/7 emergency helpline number +880-2-988-6362 and consular services number +880-2-988-6363. General emergency number in Bangladesh is 999 (police, fire, ambulance - operators speak Bengali and basic English). AV Global maintains a dedicated emergency contact for students studying in Dhaka: Mr. Rajesh Saha (local coordinator) at +880-1712-345-876, who assists with medical emergencies, legal documentation issues, university liaison, and family communication. Students are advised to register with the Indian High Commission's MADAD portal within two weeks of arrival for consular assistance and emergency alerts.

👥Sir Salimullah Medical College currently hosts approximately 220-280 Indian students across all six years of the MBBS program, forming a vibrant and supportive community. Students come predominantly from West Bengal (40%), followed by significant numbers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. This diversity creates a pan-Indian cultural environment where students celebrate regional festivals together. Each batch maintains active WhatsApp groups - a main batch group for academic updates and class schedules, separate groups for hostel coordination, exam preparation study groups, and a comprehensive Indian Students Association group connecting all years. The Indian Students Association (ISA) at Sir Salimullah Medical College organizes major cultural celebrations including grand Diwali gatherings with diyas decoration and sweets distribution, Holi color festivities at the campus grounds, Indian Independence Day flag hoisting and cultural programs, Durga Puja pandal visits (particularly special in Dhaka which has historic puja traditions), Onam Sadhya feast, Bihu dance performances, and Christmas-New Year parties. A well-established senior-junior mentoring system pairs incoming first-year students with third or fourth-year seniors who provide guidance on navigating university bureaucracy, finding best food options, coaching for NExT preparation, sharing previous year question papers, and offering emotional support during homesickness periods. AV Global conducts monthly virtual check-in sessions with students where our counselors address academic concerns, track progress, coordinate with university administration on student issues, and relay updates to parents in India. Additionally, AV Global's Dhaka representative Mr. Rajesh Saha visits the campus twice monthly for in-person meetings, assists with visa extensions, organizes group sessions on exam strategies, and serves as a trusted local guardian figure for students far from home.
🎭Sir Salimullah Medical College campus includes recreational facilities such as an outdoor sports ground where students play cricket, football, and badminton during evenings and weekends, a modest gym with basic equipment in the boys' hostel basement (weights, treadmill, bench press), and common rooms in each hostel with table tennis, carrom boards, and television for relaxation. The attached Mitford Hospital campus where students undergo clinical training also has canteen seating areas that become informal social hubs between classes. Beyond campus, Dhaka city offers numerous attractions: students visit Bashundhara City Shopping Mall (one of South Asia's largest malls) for movies and shopping, explore the historic old Dhaka areas including Armenian Church and Shankhari Bazar, enjoy boat rides at Hatirjheel Lake especially during sunset hours, dine at trendy cafes in Dhanmondi and Gulshan areas like North End Coffee Roasters and Gloria Jean's, and attend cultural events at Bangladesh National Museum and Liberation War Museum. Weekend trips are popular with groups traveling to Cox's Bazar beach (flight or overnight bus), Sundarbans for wildlife tours, Srimangal tea estates, and Rangamati hill tracts. Sports remain central to Indian student life with inter-batch cricket tournaments during winter months, football leagues, and badminton competitions. Many students join local gyms like Fitness First or The Gym in Gulshan area (monthly membership Rs.2,500-4,000) for structured workouts. Annual college fest and sports day bring together Bangladeshi and international students. Students budget approximately Rs.3,000-7,000 monthly for entertainment including weekend restaurant outings, movie tickets (Rs.200-400), occasional shopping, and local transport for city exploration. The proximity to Kolkata (short flight away) also means some students visit India for long weekends, adding to social connectivity with home.

After MBBS: Your Career Paths

🇮🇳
India
NExT / FMGE

For Indian students graduating from Sir Salimullah Medical College, the pathway to practice medicine in India requires clearing the National Exit Test (NExT), which has replaced the previous FMGE examination. The NExT consists of two steps: NExT Step 1 (theory examination with multiple-choice questions covering all pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects) and NExT Step 2 (practical examination assessing clinical skills and patient management through OSCE format). After successfully clearing both NExT steps with the minimum qualifying percentile, graduates must apply for registration with the State Medical Council in their home state - this registration process typically takes 2-3 months involving document verification, original degree certificate submission, and payment of registration fees ranging Rs.

5,000-15,000 depending on the state. Once registered, doctors can begin practice in India. Starting salaries for NExT-qualified MBBS doctors vary: government sector medical officers in primary health centers and district hospitals earn Rs.

60,000-80,000 per month with additional rural posting allowances, while private hospital junior doctors and resident medical officers start at Rs. 40,000-65,000 monthly depending on hospital tier and city location. Doctors aspiring for postgraduate specialization must appear for NEET-PG after their State Medical Council registration, competing for MD/MS seats in government and private medical colleges across India.

Sir Salimullah Medical College's curriculum follows a traditional subject-wise approach with extensive bedside clinical training at the 2,300-bed Mitford Hospital - this practical clinical exposure significantly helps in NExT Step 2 OSCE examinations where candidates must demonstrate examination techniques, patient communication, and clinical reasoning. The college's emphasis on internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics rotations aligns well with high-weightage NExT topics, giving students advantages in clinical case-based questions that now dominate the NExT pattern.

🇺🇸
USA
USMLE

Graduates of Sir Salimullah Medical College who wish to pursue medical careers in the United States must complete the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) pathway consisting of three steps: USMLE Step 1 (basic medical sciences exam testing understanding of normal and abnormal biological processes), USMLE Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge exam assessing clinical science knowledge and patient care skills), and USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills exam, currently suspended but may resume). Before applying for residency, students must obtain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certification, which requires passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, plus verification of medical school credentials. Sir Salimullah Medical College is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and holds ECFMG eligibility, meaning graduates are permitted to apply for ECFMG certification and pursue USMLE.

The USMLE preparation requires dedicated self-study typically beginning in Year 4 or 5 of medical school using resources like First Aid, UWorld question bank, Pathoma, and Sketchy Medical, with many students taking 12-18 months of focused preparation. Total USMLE examination costs including Step 1 (USD 1,000), Step 2 CK (USD 1,000), application fees, study resources, and preparatory courses amount to approximately USD 5,000-8,000 (Rs. 4.

4-7. 1 Lakhs). After passing USMLE steps, graduates apply for residency positions through the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) Match, which is highly competitive for international medical graduates with match rates around 55-60%.

US residency positions for first-year residents (PGY-1) offer salaries ranging USD 55,000-70,000 annually (Rs. 48-62 Lakhs), increasing progressively each year of training. After completing residency (3-7 years depending on specialty), board-certified attending physicians in the United States earn substantially higher salaries: primary care physicians USD 200,000-250,000 annually, specialists like cardiologists, gastroenterologists, and radiologists USD 350,000-500,000, and surgical specialists often exceeding USD 400,000-600,000 annually.

However, students must realistically understand that the USMLE pathway from Bangladesh medical colleges is challenging and requires exceptional academic performance, strong clinical skills demonstration through US clinical rotations (electives), excellent recommendation letters, and often multiple application cycles before securing residency positions.

🇬🇧
UK
PLAB

For graduates of Sir Salimullah Medical College aiming to practice medicine in the United Kingdom, the pathway involves passing the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) examination and obtaining GMC (General Medical Council) registration. The process consists of two parts: PLAB 1 is a computer-based multiple-choice examination testing medical knowledge across all clinical subjects, held at British Council centers in multiple countries including India and Bangladesh (examination fee GBP 241 or approximately Rs. 26,000), and PLAB 2 is a practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) testing clinical and communication skills through 16 stations, conducted only in GMC centers in Manchester or London (examination fee GBP 871 or approximately Rs.

95,000 plus travel, accommodation, and visa costs totaling Rs. 1. 5-2 Lakhs for Indian students traveling to UK).

After successfully passing both PLAB parts, graduates apply for GMC registration as a licensed medical practitioner in the UK. Sir Salimullah Medical College graduates are eligible for the PLAB pathway as the college is recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools, which is the primary requirement for GMC registration eligibility. Total PLAB preparation and examination costs including study materials, online question banks, coaching courses, examination fees, and UK travel for PLAB 2 amount to approximately Rs.

2. 5-3. 5 Lakhs.

Once GMC registered, doctors enter the NHS Foundation Programme - a two-year structured training (F1 and F2 years) rotating through various medical and surgical specialties. Foundation Year 1 doctors earn approximately GBP 29,000-34,000 annually (Rs. 31-36 Lakhs at current exchange rates), while Foundation Year 2 salaries increase to GBP 34,000-40,000.

After foundation training, doctors can apply for specialty training programs in their chosen field (GP training, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, etc. ) with salaries increasing progressively: specialty trainees earn GBP 43,000-63,000 depending on training year, and consultant-level specialists earn GBP 88,000-119,000 or higher (Rs. 95 Lakhs to 1.

3 Crores annually). The UK pathway appeals to many Indian medical graduates due to relatively shorter training periods compared to US residency, better work-life balance in NHS, and opportunities for permanent settlement through skilled worker visas leading to indefinite leave to remain after five years.

Bangladesh
Local Residency

Students who complete MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College receive a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC). To obtain local medical practice license in Bangladesh, graduates must complete a one-year compulsory rotating internship at affiliated teaching hospitals, after which they can register with BMDC and practice as registered medical practitioners in Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh offers residency programs in various specialties through the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) where doctors can pursue FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) qualifications equivalent to MD/MS postgraduate degrees - these residency positions are competitive and primarily reserved for Bangladeshi nationals, though a limited number of seats may be available for international candidates.

For Indian students, practicing permanently in Bangladesh is uncommon as most return to India to clear NExT and establish careers at home. However, the local clinical training environment during the 5. 5-year MBBS program at Mitford Hospital provides invaluable practical experience: students manage patients under supervision, perform clinical procedures, participate in surgeries as assistants, conduct deliveries in obstetrics wards, and develop clinical reasoning skills that prove beneficial whether they ultimately practice in India, pursue USMLE for USA, or take PLAB for UK careers.

Sir Salimullah Medical College itself offers postgraduate programs including Doctor of Medicine (MD) in various subjects and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees, but these are primarily designed for Bangladeshi students and practicing doctors. Some Indian graduates have pursued short-term diplomas or observerships in specialized departments at Mitford Hospital to enhance specific clinical skills before returning to India for NExT preparation, but this is optional rather than standard practice.

PG & Specialization Options

After clearing FMGE / NExT, Indian graduates must register with the State Medical Council. PG admissions are via NEET-PG. Foreign graduates may also pursue USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), or AMC (Australia).

Complete Guide to MBBS at SSMC

Sir Salimullah Medical College in Dhaka stands as one of South Asia's most historically significant and academically distinguished government medical institutions, tracing its remarkable lineage back to 1875 when Lieutenant Colonel Atchison established Dhaka Medical School to address the dire shortage of trained medical practitioners in British Bengal. Over its extraordinary 149-year journey, this institution has evolved from a modest Licentiate Medical Faculty school into a premier medical college that has produced over 6,000 physicians now practicing across India, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and throughout South Asia. The college was renamed in 1962 to honor Nawab Sir Salimullah, the progressive Nawab of Dhaka whose philanthropic vision and advocacy for education transformed Bengal's social landscape in the early 20th century. For Indian students pursuing MBBS in Sir Salimullah Medical College Dhaka, the institution offers an unbeatable combination of historical prestige, complete NMC recognition, extraordinarily affordable fees, and clinical training opportunities that rival the finest government medical colleges in India. The Sir Salimullah Medical College Dhaka fees for Indian students stand at just $5,200 per year (approximately Rs.4,62,800), making the total 6-year MBBS cost including tuition, hostel, food, and living expenses approximately Rs.38-42 lakhs - significantly lower than comparable NMC approved medical colleges in other countries and a fraction of the cost of private medical colleges in India which charge Rs.80 lakhs to Rs.2 crore for the complete MBBS program. This represents exceptional value, particularly considering the clinical exposure students receive at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the largest public hospital in Bangladesh with 2,300 beds and over 3,000 daily outpatient visits. The college's curriculum is deliberately structured to prepare students for FMGE/NExT examinations, incorporating extensive MCQ practice, OSCE-based clinical assessments, and systematic coverage of topics frequently tested in Indian screening examinations. The geographical and cultural proximity to India makes Dhaka an ideal choice for Indian students - the city is just 90 minutes by flight from Kolkata, the Bengali language shares similarities with Hindi making daily communication manageable, and the food, climate, and social environment feel familiar and comfortable compared to more distant European or Central Asian destinations. Sir Salimullah Medical College maintains a thriving community of 450+ Indian students across all academic years, creating strong peer support networks and celebrating Indian festivals including Diwali, Holi, and Independence Day on campus. AV Global Overseas Education has maintained a trusted partnership with Sir Salimullah Medical College since 2016, successfully placing 280+ Indian NEET-qualified students who have achieved an impressive 89% FMGE pass rate, significantly higher than the national average. The college is fully recognized as an NMC approved medical college, has been continuously listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) since 1984, and holds ECFMG eligibility for graduates interested in pursuing USMLE pathway to medical practice in the United States. The 180-member faculty includes distinguished professors with postgraduate qualifications from premier institutions in India, UK, and USA, maintaining a healthy faculty-to-student ratio of 1:9 that ensures personalized mentorship during clinical rotations. Beyond the primary teaching hospital, students access 8 additional affiliated government hospitals covering all major specialties and providing exposure to diverse patient populations and disease patterns common in South Asian populations. The campus infrastructure includes the original 1904 colonial-era academic building, modern lecture halls with audio-visual equipment, well-equipped anatomy dissection halls with adequate cadaveric material, a digitized medical library with access to international journals and databases, simulation centers for clinical skills practice, and separate hostel facilities for male and female students with 24-hour security, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Indian vegetarian food options. Dhaka city itself offers affordable cost of living with monthly expenses of Rs.15,000-20,000 covering food, local transportation, mobile connectivity, and entertainment - substantially lower than costs in European countries or even metropolitan Indian cities. The city has excellent healthcare infrastructure, reliable internet connectivity, international cuisine options, and a growing expatriate community. For Indian students, obtaining a Bangladesh student visa is straightforward with minimal documentation and processing time of 2-3 weeks. The climate is similar to eastern India with hot, humid summers and mild winters, requiring no major lifestyle adjustments. MBBS graduates from Sir Salimullah Medical College have successfully cleared FMGE/NExT and are now practicing in government and private hospitals across India including AIIMS, Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare, and various state government hospitals, while others have pursued postgraduate specializations in India and abroad. The combination of affordable fees, excellent clinical training, familiar cultural environment, and strong track record of FMGE success makes Sir Salimullah Medical College an outstanding choice for academically sincere Indian students who scored qualifying marks in NEET but did not secure government medical college seats in India.
