About

About DTMU

AV Global recommends David Tvildiani Medical University as the most distinctly unique private medical university in Georgia. Founded in 1989, DTMU is the only medical university in Georgia that runs a fully USMLE-based curriculum, making it the preferred choice for Indian students who aspire to pursue careers in the United States, United Kingdom, or other international destinations beyond India. The university holds complete NMC recognition, WDOMS listing, and ECFMG eligibility.

Its standout feature is the on-campus hostel within a gated, guarded compound — the only such arrangement across all Georgian medical universities. With annual tuition of $6,000, 36+ affiliated teaching hospitals, and a legacy of producing physicians working in prominent US and European hospitals, DTMU suits academically motivated students who want a globally competitive medical degree at an affordable cost. AV Global has supported DTMU admissions since 2015 with a dedicated Georgia office team.

History & Founding

David Tvildiani Medical University traces its roots to 1989 when Academician David Tvildiani and Dr. Dimitri Tvildiani established the AIETI Medical School — the first private higher medical institution in the entire country of Georgia.

Academician David Tvildiani was a renowned Georgian cardiologist, founder of Heliomagnetic Cardiology, and honored scientist of Georgia who served as the first rector until his passing in 2010. The school was recognized by WHO and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) as early as 1995, just six years after founding — a testament to its rapid academic credibility.

Following the development of Residency, PhD, and Doctorate programs, and the addition of a Nursing School, AIETI Medical School was upgraded to university status by the National Authorization Council in 2011 and renamed David Tvildiani Medical University in honor of its founder. Today, the university is led by Rector Prof.

Levan Tvildiani and operates two campuses in Tbilisi and Rustavi. Over 200 DTMU graduates are currently practicing or completing residency training in the USA, Germany, Britain, Sweden, and other countries — a proud track record of global medical careers.

Accreditation & Approvals

David Tvildiani Medical University carries a comprehensive portfolio of international recognitions. It is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, making graduates eligible for FMGE/NExT to practice in India.

The university has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) — the global WHO-endorsed standard — since 1995. It holds ECFMG eligibility for the USMLE pathway to US medical practice and meets European standards for PLAB (UK).

DTMU is accredited by the Georgian Ministry of Education and is a member of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), FAIMER, ORPHEUS, and the Eurasian Universities Union (EURAS). Students should verify NMC recognition status on the official NMC website before enrolling to confirm continued eligibility.

Faculty & Teaching

DTMU employs over 300 qualified academic and clinical faculty members, including professors trained at leading medical institutions in the United States, Germany, UK, and Georgia. A notable proportion hold PhD or Doctorate degrees, and many are practicing clinicians who bring real-world patient management experience into the classroom.

The university actively recruits faculty who have trained or worked abroad, ensuring the USMLE-based curriculum is taught by professionals familiar with international medical licensing standards. Faculty-to-student ratios are maintained to ensure mentorship and personalized academic guidance across all six years of the program.

Campus Infrastructure

DTMU operates from two campuses. The main Tbilisi campus at 2/6 Ljubljana Street, Dighomi, is a modern, gated, and fully secured facility housing lecture halls, simulation labs, anatomy dissection rooms, digital learning centers, a well-stocked medical library, computer labs, a cafeteria, sports facilities including a gymnasium and swimming pool, and — uniquely — four on-campus hostels for boys and girls, all within the compound.

The Rustavi campus, located approximately 22 km from the city center, was specifically developed for international students and includes DTMU's own dedicated teaching hospital. Both campuses provide 24/7 security, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a safe, conducive environment for focused medical study.

The on-campus living model is especially appreciated by Indian parents who prioritize student safety and supervised accommodation.

Teaching Hospital

DTMU provides clinical training through an extensive network of 36+ affiliated teaching hospitals, with five major hospitals located within minutes of the Tbilisi campus providing immediate access for clinical rotations from Year 3 onwards. The Rustavi campus houses DTMU's own dedicated teaching hospital offering 130 outpatient beds and handling a high patient footfall across multiple specialties including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and ENT.

Students rotate systematically through these hospitals under the direct supervision of experienced clinicians and university faculty. The clinical exposure model at DTMU progressively increases patient responsibility from Year 3 through Year 6, ensuring graduates are practice-ready.

The hospitals are equipped with modern diagnostic technology including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and advanced laboratory facilities. This breadth of clinical exposure is one of the most compelling reasons to choose DTMU over other private Georgian universities.

Curriculum

Course Structure & Curriculum

The MBBS program at David Tvildiani Medical University spans six years and is entirely structured around the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) syllabus — making it the only medical university in Georgia with this curriculum model. This USMLE alignment is a powerful long-term advantage for students who wish to pursue careers in the USA, UK, or any country that values American medical education standards. Year 1 covers medical foundations: Anatomy (with full cadaveric dissection), Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, and Medical Biology, with laboratory practicals and simulation sessions.

  • Year 2 transitions to disease mechanisms: Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Immunology, and Pathophysiology, with lab diagnostics and microscopy practicals. Year 3 introduces clinical medicine: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics-Gynecology. Students begin clinical ward rotations in affiliated hospitals with supervised patient examinations.
  • Year 4 advances clinical training with 70% of the year spent in clinical postings covering specializations including Neurology, Cardiology, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. Year 5 focuses on specialty exposure with 75% clinical postings including Ophthalmology, ENT, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, and Forensic Medicine. Year 6 is professional preparation: 80% clinical internship with elective rotations, final university examinations, and research project completion.

Teaching methodology includes computer-based MCQ examinations simulating the USMLE environment, case-based discussions, simulation center training, and structured clinical skill assessments. Students also have access to free USMLE preparation courses offered by the university throughout the program. The curriculum content directly aligns with FMGE/NExT examination requirements for India, making DTMU graduates well-prepared for multiple international licensing pathways.

Performance

FMGE / NExT Passing Performance

David Tvildiani Medical University is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) — both mandatory requirements for Indian students planning to practice medicine in India after studying abroad. DTMU has maintained WDOMS listing continuously since 1995, one of the earliest international recognitions achieved by any Georgian medical institution. After completing MBBS from DTMU, Indian graduates must clear the National Exit Test (NExT) — the examination replacing FMGE — to obtain an Indian medical license.

Students must also obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate before starting MBBS abroad as per current NMC screening regulations. We strongly recommend verifying DTMU's NMC recognition on the official NMC India website (nmc. org.

in) immediately before enrolling, as recognition status is subject to periodic review.

AV Global NExT Preparation

AV Global's NExT coaching program is specifically structured around the DTMU curriculum's USMLE base, giving our students a unique dual advantage — they are simultaneously prepared for both NExT (India) and USMLE Step 1 foundations. Coaching begins from Year 3 with weekly structured revision modules covering Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine aligned with NMC examination patterns.

From Year 4, we introduce full-length NExT simulation tests with performance analytics. A dedicated subject-wise question bank developed by our academic team mirrors current NExT patterns.

Year 5 onwards includes intensive clinical case discussions and OSCE-style practical preparation sessions. Our coaching is delivered online through a student portal accessible from Tbilisi, with live doubt-clearing sessions every week.

Students who follow our AV coaching pathway consistently outperform the national average. With DTMU's USMLE curriculum as the foundation and AV Global's India-focused coaching layer on top, students gain preparation depth that few consultancies can provide.

Over 75 DTMU-enrolled students have cleared FMGE/NExT with AV Global coaching support.

Accommodation

DTMU holds a significant advantage over every other medical university in Georgia: it is the only institution with an on-campus hostel inside a gated, secured university compound. Four hostel buildings are available — separate wings for male and female students — all within walking distance of classrooms and labs.

Rooms are furnished with beds, study tables, wardrobes, and adequate storage. Common areas include a television lounge, gaming room, and recreational spaces.

The hostel features a gymnasium with modern equipment and a swimming pool for physical fitness — facilities unmatched by any Georgian peer. A 24/7 warden and security team monitor the premises around the clock.

Wi-Fi, hot water, and laundry facilities are provided. Monthly hostel cost ranges from $80–140 per person depending on room type (2-sharing or 3-sharing).

For Indian parents, this fully supervised, campus-based accommodation removes one of the biggest anxieties about sending their child abroad. Students on the Rustavi campus also have dedicated residential facilities with similar amenities.

AV Global coordinates hostel allocation through the university to ensure smooth move-in from Day 1.

🍲Food

Indian food is comfortably accessible for DTMU students in Tbilisi. The university's campus cafeteria serves international cuisine, and students regularly cook Indian meals in hostel kitchen areas using locally sourced Indian groceries — spices, lentils, rice, paneer, and frozen foods are all available at Indian stores in Tbilisi's Saburtalo and Vake districts.

Popular Indian restaurants near campus include Namaste India, Taste of India, Spice Lounge, and Delhi Darbar. Students enjoy both North and South Indian dishes with customizable spice levels.

A typical restaurant meal costs ₹300–500, while cooking at home reduces food expenses to ₹5,000–8,000 monthly. Georgian cuisine is also relatively vegetarian-friendly with options like Lobiani (bean bread), Pkhali (vegetable rolls), and fresh salads easily available.

The majority of DTMU Indian students report that adjusting to food in Tbilisi is easier compared to universities in Russia or Kazakhstan.

City

Tbilisi, Georgia's vibrant capital city, sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of old-world charm and modern urban living. The city has a population of over 1.

2 million and experiences a Mediterranean-like climate with warm summers (20–30°C) and mild winters (0–7°C) — far more manageable for Indian students compared to the extreme winters of Russia or Eastern Europe. Tbilisi is well-connected by an efficient metro network, buses, and affordable ride-sharing apps.

Students enjoy weekend trips to Mtskheta, Kazbegi National Park, Batumi (on the Black Sea), and the historic wine region of Kakheti. The city has modern shopping malls, English-language cinemas, cultural landmarks, sulfur bath districts, and a cosmopolitan social scene.

Monthly living costs in Tbilisi range from ₹15,000–26,000, making it one of the most affordable capitals for international students in the region. Tbilisi International Airport connects to major Indian cities via transit hubs, making visits home manageable.

Safety

Tbilisi consistently ranks among the safest capital cities in Eastern Europe. On Numbeo's crime index, the city scores a crime safety index of 74/100 — indicating very low crime rates overall.

Violent crime against international students is extremely rare. The DTMU campus operates as a gated compound with 24/7 professional security, making it even safer than standard city accommodations.

Female students report feeling safe traveling independently during daylight and in groups at night, particularly in student neighborhoods like Saburtalo, Vake, and Dighomi (where DTMU is located). Emergency services are accessible via the national emergency line 112, with English-speaking operators available.

The Indian Embassy in Georgia is located at 5 Akhvlediani Street, Tbilisi. Embassy helpline: +995 322 291 895.

Students are advised to register with the embassy within 30 days of arrival. Local police are responsive and helpful in student areas.

AV Global's Georgia office provides a 24/7 emergency contact line specifically for Indian students, ensuring immediate assistance in any situation.

Community

Over 500 Indian students currently study at DTMU, forming one of the strongest Indian student communities among private medical universities in Georgia. Students from across India — Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan — have established active WhatsApp groups per batch for study support, event coordination, and helping newcomers settle in.

Annual festivals including Diwali, Holi, and Independence Day are celebrated with great enthusiasm, bringing together Indian students from across years. Senior students actively mentor juniors through the demanding first two years of pre-clinical study.

AV Global students at DTMU stay connected with our counselors through monthly check-in calls, and our Georgia office representative is physically present to assist with academic, administrative, or personal concerns. The on-campus hostel model naturally strengthens community bonds, as students share spaces, meals, and study sessions daily.

Social Life

Life at DTMU strikes a healthy balance between rigorous academics and rewarding personal experiences. On campus, the gymnasium, swimming pool, gaming lounge, and common areas give students space to recharge between study sessions.

Tbilisi itself is a dynamic city with an active café culture, weekend markets, art galleries, music venues, and scenic outdoor attractions. Students frequently explore the city's famous Old Town with its cobblestone lanes and medieval churches, take cable car rides for panoramic views, and enjoy the iconic sulfur bath district.

Short road trips to Kazbegi's mountain landscapes or Batumi's Black Sea beaches offer excellent weekend getaways. Sports are popular — cricket, badminton, and football matches bring Indian students together regularly.

The city's moderate cost of living means students can enjoy entertainment, dining out, and weekend excursions without stretching their monthly budget.

Careers

Career Pathways After Graduation

Upon completing MBBS from DTMU and clearing the National Exit Test (NExT), graduates must register with their respective State Medical Council to receive a practicing license in India. NExT replaces FMGE as the single gateway for all foreign medical graduates. The registration process post-NExT clearance takes approximately 2–3 months.

Graduates can join government hospitals as medical officers, work in private hospitals, or establish private practices after gaining experience. Starting salaries range from ₹6–10 lakhs per annum in private hospitals and ₹8–12 lakhs in government positions. PG specialization (MD/MS) is accessible through NEET-PG after NExT clearance.

Given DTMU's USMLE-based curriculum, graduates are particularly well-prepared for the clinical case-based NExT examination pattern, which differs from older rote-learning approaches.

Student Experiences

The USMLE-based curriculum at DTMU is genuinely different. Every exam feels like clinical problem-solving, not rote memorization. The on-campus hostel made my transition from India extremely smooth — parents can trust that the environment is completely safe and supervised. AV Global's coaching from Year 3 has already started shaping my NExT preparation systematically. Extremely happy with this choice.

Coming from a small city in Rajasthan, I was nervous about studying abroad. The on-campus hostel meant I never felt unsafe, and the Indian student community at DTMU made me feel at home within weeks. The USMLE curriculum is challenging but rewarding. AV Global's Georgia representative helped me with everything from residence permit to local banking setup. Could not have asked for better support.
