The Honest Truth About NEET Scores and Studying Abroad

Every year, we receive hundreds of calls from worried parents and students asking the same question: is my NEET score enough to study MBBS abroad? The answer might surprise you, because it is not as complicated as most people think.

Let us break this down clearly so you know exactly where you stand and what your options are.

What the NMC Actually Requires

The National Medical Commission of India requires that every Indian student who wants to study MBBS abroad must have qualified in NEET. This is a mandatory requirement regardless of which country you choose to study in.

For the general category, qualifying NEET means scoring at or above the 50th percentile. For SC, ST, and OBC categories, the cutoff is the 40th percentile. In practical terms, for the 2025 NEET exam, the qualifying score for general category was approximately 137 out of 720.

Here is the key point that many consultancies do not tell you: the NMC does not specify a minimum score beyond the qualifying cutoff. As long as you have qualified in NEET, you are eligible to study abroad.

Score Ranges and Country Options

While you only need to qualify NEET, the reality is that different countries and universities have different practical expectations. Here is an honest breakdown:

Score Between 137 and 250

With this score range, you have excellent options in countries like Georgia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. Universities in these countries accept Indian students with qualifying NEET scores and do not have additional score requirements. The tuition fees are also very affordable, making these countries ideal for families on a moderate budget.

Score Between 250 and 400

This score range opens up more options including universities in Russia, the Philippines, and some universities in Europe. You may also be eligible for certain scholarship programs that some universities offer to students with above average NEET scores.

Score Between 400 and 550

With a score in this range, you have a strong profile for top ranked international universities. Countries like Germany and certain prestigious universities in Russia and Georgia may give you priority admission. Some universities also offer partial fee waivers for students with high NEET scores.

Score Above 550

At this score level, you might consider whether MBBS abroad is the right choice, as you may have options in some Indian government and private colleges as well. However, many students with scores in this range still choose to study abroad due to lower overall costs and better infrastructure at certain international universities.

What If You Did Not Qualify NEET?

If you did not qualify NEET, you cannot study MBBS abroad and return to practice in India. This is a non negotiable requirement from the NMC. We always encourage students to reattempt NEET rather than seek shortcuts, because any shortcut will cause problems later when you try to get your degree recognized in India.

Some consultancies may tell you that you can study without NEET. This is misleading. While a university abroad may admit you without NEET, the NMC will not recognize your degree when you return to India.
