Is NEET Required for MBBS in Georgia? Eligibility Criteria Explained for Indian Students

AV Global Overseas Education at AV Globalยท1 Jan 2026ยท 13 min read

Every week, without fail, we get the same message from students. It goes something like this: "Sir, I found a consultant who says I can do MBBS in Georgia without NEET. Is that true? Please tell me honestly."

And that one question asked with genuine hope behind it is exactly why we are writing this blog. Because there is a very important distinction that most students do not know, that some consultants deliberately blur, and that can cost a student their entire medical career if they get it wrong.

So let us answer this completely, clearly, and honestly. The way you deserve to hear it.

The Short Answer First

Yes, NEET is required for MBBS in Georgia if your goal is to practice medicine in India after graduation.

Georgian universities do not ask for your NEET score as part of their admission process. That part is true. But the National Medical Commission of India the authority that decides whether your foreign medical degree is valid in India absolutely requires you to have a qualifying NEET score. Without it, you cannot appear for FMGE or NExT, and without those, you cannot get a medical license in India.

That is the distinction. The university does not need your NEET score. India does.

And since 99% of Indian students doing MBBS in Georgia plan to come back and practice medicine in India, NEET is effectively mandatory for you.

What the NMC Rule Actually Says

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued clear regulations under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 which are fully enforced in 2026.

Here is what those regulations say, in plain language:

  • Any Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) who wants to study MBBS abroad must have a valid NEET-UG qualifying score at the time of taking admission
  • This NEET score must be valid NEET scores are considered valid for 3 years from the date of the result
  • The course you join must have a duration of at least 54 months of academic study plus a compulsory 12-month internship at the same foreign institution
  • The university must be NMC-approved at the time of your admission and at the time of your graduation

These are not optional guidelines. They are the legal framework under which your foreign medical degree will be evaluated when you return to India.

The Complete Eligibility Criteria for MBBS in Georgia 2026

Now that we have established the NEET mandate, here is the complete eligibility picture for Indian students applying to MBBS in Georgia for the 2026 intake:

Eligibility Criteria Requirement
Academic Qualification10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as core subjects
Minimum Marks General Category50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) combined
Minimum Marks SC/ST/OBC40% aggregate in PCB combined
NEET QualificationMandatory qualifying score required as per NMC
Minimum Age17 years as of December 31 of the admission year
Maximum AgeNo upper age limit (as per latest NTA ruling)
IELTS / TOEFLNot required all programs are 100% English medium
Valid PassportRequired at the time of application

What NEET Score Do You Actually Need for Georgia?

This is where students get a genuine sense of relief. Unlike Indian government medical colleges where you need a rank in the top few thousand, Georgia does not set any specific NEET score requirement of its own.

All you need is a NEET qualifying score which means clearing the minimum qualifying cutoff set by NTA. Here is the category-wise breakdown:

Category Required NEET Percentile Approximate Score Range
General / Unreserved (UR)50th percentile137 to 147 marks
SC / ST / OBC40th percentile105 to 120 marks
PWD (Persons with Disabilities)45th percentile120 to 130 marks

So if you are a General category student who scored 140 in NEET and could not crack a government seat or afford a private seat in India, you are fully eligible to apply for MBBS in Georgia at any NMC-approved university.

In fact, if you have scored anywhere between 200 and 300, you have access to good options in Georgia. Between 300 and 400 opens up premium universities. Above 400, you could be eligible for scholarships at select Georgian universities.

Debunking the Myth: "MBBS in Georgia Without NEET"

Let us talk about this myth directly, because it is genuinely dangerous for students who believe it.

When you search online, you will find articles, consultants, and even some university promotional material saying things like: "Study MBBS in Georgia without NEET no score required for admission!"

Here is what that actually means and what it does not mean:

  • What is technically true: Georgian universities themselves do not check your NEET score as part of their application process. They will give you an Offer Letter and even an Admission Letter without ever asking for your NEET scorecard. The university's job is to admit students not to verify Indian regulatory compliance.
  • What is dangerously false: The idea that studying MBBS in Georgia without a qualifying NEET score is safe for Indian students who plan to return to India.

The moment you step off that plane in India with your Georgian MD degree and want to practice medicine, the NMC steps in. And the NMC's first question is: "Did you qualify NEET before you enrolled?" If the answer is no, your 6-year degree and your entire financial investment become essentially worthless in India.

Think about that. Six years abroad. Rs. 30 to 50 Lakhs spent. A legitimate MBBS degree from an NMC-approved university. And you cannot use it to practice in India because you did not clear a 137-mark cutoff before you left.

No consultancy, no agent, and no well-meaning relative can fix that problem after the fact.

What Exactly Happens If You Study MBBS in Georgia Without a NEET Qualifying Score?

The consequences are specific, serious, and irreversible once you have already enrolled.

1. Your degree will not be recognised by NMC.

NMC will flag your enrollment as non-compliant with FMGL Regulations, and your MD degree from Georgia will not be eligible for recognition.

2. You will not be allowed to appear for FMGE or NExT.

FMGE and NExT are the gateway licensing exams that foreign medical graduates must clear to practice in India. Eligibility to appear for these exams requires a valid NEET qualifying score at the time of original admission. Without that, you are barred from the exam entirely.

3. You cannot register with any State Medical Council or NMC.

Medical practice in India requires NMC registration. Without NExT clearance, there is no registration. Without NEET qualification, there is no NExT eligibility. The chain is broken at the very first link.

4. You can only practice in Georgia or a third country not India.

You will have a valid medical degree. You can use it in Georgia, or potentially in countries that do not require NEET verification. But if India is your goal, the path is permanently closed.

5. No legal remedy exists after the fact.

This is not a situation where you can approach NMC later with documentation or petitions. The regulation is clear and the non-compliance is documented from the date of your enrollment.

We are not saying this to scare anyone. We are saying it because we have spoken to families who found out about this rule after their child had already completed 2 or 3 years in Georgia. That is a crisis no family should have to face.

Can You Apply for MBBS in Georgia With a Low NEET Score?

Absolutely yes and this is genuinely good news for students who qualified NEET but did not score high enough for an Indian government seat.

Here is the thing: Georgia does not rank you based on your NEET score. They only care that you have a valid qualifying score. So a student who scored 142 and a student who scored 650 both have the same admission eligibility at Georgian universities. The only difference is the Indian government college where the 650-scorer goes.

For students with NEET scores in the 137 to 400 range, Georgia is one of the most practical, affordable, and quality MBBS pathways available. Here is how to approach it based on your score:

NEET Score Range What It Means for Georgia
137 to 200Fully eligible for all NMC-approved Georgian universities; focus on budget-friendly options
200 to 300Good standing; access to most mid-range universities in Georgia
300 to 400Strong position; access to premium universities like TSMU, New Vision, GAU
400 to 550Excellent position; eligible for merit considerations and some scholarship programs
550+Top tier; government seats in India may also be in range compare options carefully

The practical advice we give students with scores between 137 and 250 is this: do not let a low score become a source of shame. A qualifying NEET score is a qualifying NEET score. It means you have the academic foundation to handle medical education. Georgia will judge you on that foundation not on whether you outscored 5 lakh other students.

A Word on the 2026 Public University Update

There is one important update for the 2026 intake that students and parents need to know.

Georgian public (government) universities including institutions like Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University have been evaluating changes to their international MBBS admissions for 2026. Reports indicate that some public Georgian universities may halt or restrict international MBBS admissions as part of local regulatory changes.

This does not affect the large number of excellent private NMC-approved Georgian universities like Georgian American University, Georgian National University SEU, BAU International University, New Vision University, David Tvildiani Medical University, and others which continue to actively accept Indian students for the 2026 intake.

We are monitoring this situation closely at AV Global Overseas Education and will update families individually as confirmed information becomes available. If you are specifically targeting a government university in Georgia, speak to our counsellors before applying to verify current admission status.

NEET 2026 Qualifying Cutoffs for MBBS in Georgia: What to Aim For

NEET 2026 results are expected in June 2026, and the qualifying cutoffs are set by NTA based on exam performance each year. Based on recent trends, here is what students can realistically expect for the qualifying threshold:

Category Expected Qualifying Score (NEET 2026) Safe Score to Aim For
General / UR137 to 150 marks200+ for comfortable eligibility
OBC / SC / ST105 to 120 marks150+ for comfortable eligibility
PWD120 to 130 marks150+ for comfortable eligibility

If you are currently preparing for NEET 2026 with Georgia as your target destination, aim for 200 or above. It gives you a comfortable margin above the qualifying cutoff, and it positions you well for mid-tier Georgian universities that consistently show strong FMGE outcomes.

The NMC Rules Checklist: Are You Eligible?

Use this as your final self-check before starting the Georgia MBBS application process. You need every single item on this list to be a yes:

  • I have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English
  • I have scored minimum 50% in PCB (40% if SC/ST/OBC)
  • I have a valid NEET-UG qualifying score (from NEET 2024, 2025, or 2026 within 3 years)
  • I will be 17 years old by December 31, 2026
  • I am applying to a university that holds NMC recognition at the time of my admission
  • The university program is at least 54 months of academics plus 12 months of internship
  • I have a valid Indian passport or have applied for one

If even one of these is a no, stop and speak to a counsellor before proceeding. Most issues are fixable but only before you apply, not after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NEET required for MBBS in Georgia?

Yes. While Georgian universities do not ask for NEET scores as part of their own admission process, NEET qualifying is mandatory as per NMC's FMGL Regulations, 2021. Any Indian student who studies MBBS abroad without a qualifying NEET score will not be eligible to appear for FMGE or NExT, and therefore cannot practice medicine in India.

What is the minimum NEET score required for MBBS in Georgia?

Georgian universities themselves do not set a NEET cutoff. The requirement is simply a qualifying score 50th percentile (approximately 137 to 147 marks) for General category students and 40th percentile (approximately 105 to 120 marks) for SC/ST/OBC students. There is no minimum rank required only the qualifying threshold.

Can I study MBBS in Georgia without NEET and still practice in India?

No. If you enroll in an MBBS program abroad without a valid NEET qualifying score, NMC will not recognise your degree for practice in India. You will be ineligible to appear for NExT, cannot register with NMC, and cannot practice medicine in India. There is no exception or workaround for this rule.

What happens to my MBBS degree if I studied in Georgia without NEET?

Your MD degree from a Georgian university will be a valid academic qualification that can be used in Georgia or potentially in other countries. However, it will not be recognised by NMC India, and you will have no legal pathway to practice medicine in India. The degree is effectively unusable for Indian medical practice.

My NEET score is only 160. Can I still apply for MBBS in Georgia?

Yes, absolutely. A NEET score of 160 comfortably clears the General category qualifying threshold of 137. You are fully eligible to apply to any NMC-approved Georgian university. Georgia does not rank students by NEET score qualifying is all that is needed. Speak to our counsellors at AV Global Overseas Education for university recommendations suited to your profile.

Is there an age limit for MBBS in Georgia?

The minimum age is 17 years by December 31 of the admission year. As per the latest NTA ruling, there is no upper age limit for NEET or for studying MBBS abroad.

Is NEET score valid for more than one year?

Yes. Your NEET score is valid for 3 years from the date of the result. So if you qualified NEET in 2024 or 2025 and are applying for the 2026 Georgia intake, your score is still valid.

I qualified NEET but did not appear for it this year. Do I need to appear again?

No. As long as your existing qualifying NEET score is within the 3-year validity window, you do not need to appear again for Georgia MBBS admission. Confirm your score date and validity before applying.

The Bottom Line From Our Counselling Room

Every month, we meet at least a handful of students or families who have been told by someone sometimes a well-meaning friend, sometimes an unscrupulous agent that NEET is not needed for Georgia. And every time, our job is to sit them down and walk through exactly what we have explained in this blog.

Georgia is a genuinely wonderful destination for MBBS. The universities are strong, the FMGE outcomes are the best in the world among MBBS abroad destinations, the language is not a barrier, and the cost is manageable. If you have qualified NEET even with a modest score Georgia can absolutely be the right path for your child's medical career.

But none of that works without that first checkbox being ticked. Qualify NEET. Then everything else becomes possible.
