The university was founded in the year 1804 formerly known as Imperial Kazan University. Kazan University received a federal status in 2011 and now known as Kazan Federal University. KFMU is the 2nd oldest Medical University in Russia. It is one of the best universities among 15 universities that took part in the Academic Excellence project hosted in Russia which was the event organized by the Federation of the Russian Government to increase the international competitiveness of the universities in the country in the field of research. The Kazan Federal University’s main focus in research is based on the following subjects: pharmaceuticals, petro-chemistry, bio-medicine, oil extraction, humanities, aerospace technologies etc.

More than 900 students and faculty members of the KFMU get the opportunity to visit universities and research centers abroad for seminars and conferences and gain the knowledge.

The University recently has come up with 17 centers of excellence and 80 world class research and teaching laboratories. About 50,000 students from Russia and other countries are enrolled in over 700-degree programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
